Wood Destroying Insects (WDI) or more commonly known as "Termites"

termite inspection, WDI inspection

Termites are insects, which mostly feed on dead plant matter like woodchips, decayed wood (logs), leaf litter, and soil. They are sometimes called “white ants” but they are only distantly related to ants. There are around 50 species of termites in the United States.

In addition to wood inside the home, termites are drawn inside by moisture, wood in contact with house foundations, and cracks in building exteriors. Different combinations of these factors attract different species. Additionally, geographic location plays a role in how likely homeowners are to deal with infestations.

Termite inspections are often required in order to secure funding to purchase a home (especially older ones). But they are always a good idea whether it’s required or not. The risk of termite damage to wooden structures is higher for older houses; that is why older premises are more in need of inspections. A termite inspection is vital for any new home because termite damage or infestation may not be readily apparent to the untrained eye. Even though termites can do plenty of damage in a short period of time, the damage to the foundation of your home may not present itself right away.

Here’s what you may want to know concerning the process of most home termite inspections that are carried out by pest control professionals.

The inspector will look at the interior and exterior areas of your home, checking for visible signs of a termite infestation, which include: droppings, broken wings, mud tubes, and damaged wood. During these inspections, the pest professional will closely examine all areas of the property that are accessible. These areas include:

  • Interior of the home

  • Attic

  • Basement and/or Crawl spaces

  • Other areas that are readily accessible

After this has been completed, the professional will inspect the exterior, especially areas that are dark and damp, as these spots are much more prone to termite problems.
